Can decorate the fireplace any way you like. We installed slate in certain areas as accent pieces. Does not require a permit to be installed and can be placed on the edge of your property becuase it is not considered a permanent structure. This was critical in our situation.

Assembly really is very easy and straight forward. The directions are so so, but you really don't even need them. I mounted on a new flagstone surface, which proved a bit tricky in leveling due to the uneven surface of the base, but that is my fault for using thick flagstone. The reason I bought the unit is the price to product ratio. I think getting anything comparable in size and function will cost much more. So the affordability makes the unit worth skipping some of the fancy finishes of the higher end models.
We Burned our first fire in it last night. I need to get a log rack to put on the base to aid in a good burn with better air flow. You can burn right on the deck, but it works better in a rack.
Stability. The unit assembles easy, almost too easy. It is fairly solid, but you can feel movement if you give a good shove on any upper corner. It's a lot of weight sitting on those four corner posts with no masonry adhesive or mortar. There are a few interlocking joints that hold it together, but I may still consider disassembling and gluing it up. Maybe its just the engineer in me. I also have three small children who love to climb. I honestly don't thing they could pull it down, but the fear is there. I'm also concerned if it is rated for California Earthquake loads or not. Again, it seems pretty solid and I have to push/pull pretty good to get it to shift by feel, but it's just a little unnerving.
Finally, I wish I would have spent a little more time doing a better leveling job. I have a slight 1 degree lean to the front right corner. Most wont notice it, but I will. And, the doors need a latch. Because of the slightest lean, the right door swings open on its own. It's nice that the doors open easily and nice and smooth, but my problem of being a bit hasty on the leveling is causing me to create some sort of latch. It would also be a good design addition to keep kids out after watching mine run for the fireplace with a new marshmallow by herself.
All in all a good unit, visually very attractive and the price is good. I would add something to the design to increase stability personally, but in most cases where folks dont have earthquakes or the potential for someone to try to push it over (would have to be a big guy), I think it will be just fine.

Does anyone else have a problem with smoke not being drawn up the chimney? The smoke rolls out the front of our unit and makes it unpleasant to sit around the fireplace. We love the unit but the smoke is terrible. We've tried artificial logs but there's no difference. Help please - any suggestions as to how we can correct this? Thanks
