WOODSTONE THIN CAST STONE INSTALLATION

Caution: Shelf is heavy. Use proper lifting technique to avoid injury. It is recommended to have three persons to help with installation.

Minimum tools required:

  • Level
  • Drill
  • 3/16" metal drill bit
  • 3/16" masonry drill bit
  • 3/8" masonry drill bit (to be used as a countersink for screw heads in top shelf plate)

SECURING ALUMINUM MOUNTING BRACKET TO WALL

First, determine the exact center point from left to right on wall above fireplace (exact center of firebox) for mantel installation.

Mark center point on wall.

Determine desired height for top of shelf. Dropdown 1 1/8" and mark wall. Also mark center wall point along this line.

Mark exact center point of aluminum angled bracket. Match center point on bracket to center point of wall or fireplace.

Using aluminum angled mounting bracket and level; draw a straight, level line at the 1 1/8" mark made in step 3. See Fig 1.

Locate 3 wall studs. Mark wall stud location by placing mark just above level line created in step 5.

Hold mounting bracket back in place on wall line, centered with center wall mark. Mark on bracket the location of wall studs. See Fig. 2 TIP: At location of stud, hammer in a finish nail just far enough to hit wall stud, then remove finish nail. Be certain you are going to hit the wall stud securely at the mark point you are making on bracket.

Remove metal bracket. Place bracket on a suitable, steady surface. Using 3/16" metal drill bit, drill pilot holes through bracket at the marked 3 wall stud locations. Pilot holes should be drilled through the portion of bracket that will be flat against wall. The "L" portion of bracket for holding shelf will be at the top and facing out to you.

Put bracket back in place on wall at line. Level it and secure to wall studs using the 3" long screws provided. Pull hard on bracket. Make certain it is firmly secured.

SECURING SHELF TO BRACKET

Determine which surface of shelf you prefer to have as top shelf area and bottom side. This is your discretion.

Mark center point of shelf. Then mark points 20" to the right of center and 20" to the left of center, placing the marks 1.25" off backside edge of shelf. Using 3/16" masonry drill bit, drill pilot holes at marked locations. Do not apply too much downward pressure while drilling.

Using the 3/8" masonry drill bit, drill out the top portion of pilot holes just enough to countersink screw heads down below shelf surface. Use caution to not drill to deep here. Go only about 1/8" below surface.

Using two persons to help lift and hold; lift shelf up into place on bracket. You want to match center portion of shelf with center marked area on wall (and bracket). See Fig 3.

Push shelf firmly against wall. Holding in place (it is recommended to lift the front portion of shelf upwards slightly to be sure shelf is not dropping or tilting downward toward the front) secure shelf to brackets by using the 3 ea. provided self tapping metal screws. IMPORTANT: DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. See Fig 4.

Touch up as needed with provided touch up finish and patch mix. It is recommended not fill in over the top of your screw holes. This will prevent you from having access to the screw heads to remove the shelf if needed.

Mix powder grout mix with water using very small amounts of water. The patch/grout mix is for chip areas you might have on edges or surface. Touch up with provided finish.

If you have gapping between back of shelf and wall, use a good quality acrylic latex caulk to fill. Paint over with either the provided finish or your wall color.

For a final added touch you can brush on a water based, low luster concrete sealer over finish. This will make surface area a little more durable and easier to clean. It will however add a little more sheen to the surface finish.
