The Torino Classic Stone mantel surround is created using a beautiful composite stone mantel material. Each mantel has variations in color and texture that captures the true essence of natural stone. You may order this mantel in a standard or custom size. Optional matching surround facing, hearths, and overmantels are available for this stone mantel in sized to fit your situation. Because the Classic Stone mantel is lightweight, preparation and installation are much easier and much less costly than traditional solid stone mantels. Special wall and floor reinforcement is not necessary for easy installation. Each stone mantel is fire resistant and allows for zero clearance from combustible material (no space required between firebox and this mantel material or surround facing), making it the perfect choice for gas or wood fireplaces.
You will need the following tools and materials:
Overview
Classic Stone Cast Stone Mantel Kits contain components for a typical installation, and include: mantel components (legs and shelf), facing panels (header, legs) (included on Builder Kits, optional on others) and a hearth (included on Builder Kits, optional on others). If facing panels and hearth are not supplied by Mantels Direct, please ensure the non-combustible facing panels located immediately around the firebox opening are built-up to a .75" thickness and extend at least 1" behind the inside edges of the mantel components. These installation instructions apply to all stone mantels except our Standard Stone Mantel Kits.
Handling Hints
NOTE We include a patch kit that can make repairs to cracks and chips as well as fill screw holes and seams.
Mantel components are ideally applied to solid, stable, flat and level substrates such as plaster or drywall. Wood surfaces are typically not stable and may cause cracks in components or filled joints.
NOTE Layout and dry fitting of entire mantel is recommended before any adhesive is applied.
Components may be secured using a high-strength construction adhesive (available from Mantelsdirect.com) or most home centers. The construction adhesive should be suitable for plaster or masonry material and potentially high temperature application. Use bracing to secure components tight to the wall until the adhesive sets. Avoid adhesive on exposed component surfaces and use caution not to apply too much. Use a finishing nail or a small piece of plastic (shaped like a 'V') to remove excess adhesive at joints. Clean off excess adhesive immediately as required by adhesive manufacturer instructions.
Hearth and Facing Panel Installation
Step 1 - Hearth Installation
Install the hearth first, centered on the firebox opening and set tight to the wall (Fig. 1). Set the hearth level on a bed of thin set masonry material if the floor is uneven and ensure there are no voids between the floor and underside of the hearth for complete and continuous support throughout its area, especially at the corners. Apply Construction Adhesive. (Fig. 1.1)
Step 2 - Install Facing Panel Legs
The following instructions are for Adjustable Surround Facing that contains three pieces. Custom One Piece facing will simply fit over your firebox opening.
Adjustable Surround Facing: The cavity behind Classic Cast Mantel components is designed to allow for the position of the facing panels to be adjusted and accommodate a wide range of firebox openings. Measure for the legs, and check both sides of the firebox; it may be necessary to cut the height of the legs. Cut the legs as required with a circular saw with a masonry blade. Always make your cuts on a level surface; never let the piece you are cutting fall free. Apply adhesive on the back of each leg and place into position. (Fig. 2)
Step 3 - Install your Facing Header and Optional Riser
Apply adhesive on the back of the header and place into position. (Fig. 3)
NOTE It is usually okay if your header extends beyond the outside of each leg – our fireplace mantels are designed to overlap facing material and can accommodate up to 5" on each side in most cases.
If you are using a riser panel, simply cut the panel to fit between the two facing legs, apply adhesive and place into position. (Fig. 3.1)
Mantel Installation
Step 1 - Install Mantel Legs
Install so that each mantel leg overlaps its respective facing panel. When set in place, the level height of each mantel leg must be identical to provide for a level mantel shelf. Use shims to level the mantel legs. Apply a generous and continuous bead of adhesive to ensure continuous contact between wall and bedding surface of the mantel legs. (Fig. 4) and (Fig. 4.1) Brace mantel legs securely until the adhesive sets.
NOTE If necessary, the mantel legs can be cut at the base to adjust the overall height of the mantel.
Step 2 - Install Mantel Shelf
Your mantel shelf should be set so that there is equal distance on the outside of each leg. After locating this position, mark with pencil. Apply adhesive to the back of the shelf as well as the top of each leg. (Fig. 5 and Fig. 5.1) Set the shelf. For additional security, install two (2) - 3"-long wood screws into the top of the mantel shelf and into the wood blocking below. Locate screw holes approx 1" from the wall and 18" on either side of the mantel centerline. Drill pilot holes first and countersink so that screw heads are located below the surface of the mantel shelf.
Step 3 - Screw Hole and Seam Repair
Mix a small amount of the facing powder provided with a few ounces of the white liquid to create a workable paste (peanut butter consistency). Fill screw holes and seams with a knife or small putty tool to a smooth finish. Area may be sanded lightly, after it dries, if required.
Step 4 - Sealing Your Fireplace Mantel
All Cast Stone Mantels (Polished and Honed) require a sealer as recommended by the manufacturers. Use a clean cloth and apply sealer on all components.
Step 5 - Wait To Use
After installing any of our stone mantels, wait 30 days to use your fireplace. Our Classic, Majestic, and Builder Series use a high heat formula that can withstand up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Delivery
As defined by the trucking industry, Home Delivery means "curbside delivery" in a residential area. While some drivers may assist in getting a shipment into a garage or carport, it is not a standard level of service with "curbside delivery."

Receiving Your Shipment
We are committed to making sure you are satisfied with our products. Your order is inspected prior to shipment to ensure all items are in excellent condition before they leave our facilities. Although our products are packaged securely to prevent any damage it’s possible that in rare cases, damages may occur during shipment.
Before signing for the shipment inspect the carton. The most important thing to remember about truck freight is that when you sign for the delivery you are legally accepting the product as delivered in good condition. Therefore, it is extremely important that you inspect the product prior to signing the delivery receipt. If there is damage to the carton or the product, please write "CONTENTS DAMAGED" clearly on the delivery receipt that the driver is asking you to sign, then sign. This insures that your damage issue will be easily resolved.
If your package has tears, rips or is otherwise in poor condition, open the package and inspect the contents. You may need one of the following on hand to help open the carton: knife, hammer, pry bar or wire cutters. Should you notice any damage, please note it on the delivery receipt and contact us immediately.
If your package/item is damaged, you can start the damage claim process by completing this form.
NOTE: We cannot be held responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement of damaged items if there is no notation on the Freight Delivery Receipt. Contact us within 24 hours to initiate a damage claim.

Specification Help
Our knowledgeable (and friendly!) staff is available to help you with mantel selection, measurement challenges, and other issues. One the best ways to start the process is to fill out our Measurement Form. This will give us a good idea of your current situation and the mantels that interest you. Feel free to call 1.888.493.8898, fax 615-523-2503, or email us at [email protected] with any questions. Our Fitting Guide is a great resource of the steps required for the specification of your mantel.
Fitting Guide
Selecting the right size of your Classic Cast Stone Mantel is a simple process. Each mantel in this series has a few dimensions that can change within a range (see the dimension table for each mantel). Surround facing is also made to fit your firebox opening size and location from the floor. This flexibility means that, in most cases, you may choose the exact size that best fits your situation.
NOTE: If you prefer to have us do the work and suggest an appropriate size, click here for a measurement form.
Step 1: Mantel Opening Width "C"
This is the area between the legs of the mantel. To determine, start by figuring the actual firebox opening width (see Fig. A1) by measuring the opening from side to side (don"t include any metal flange that you want to cover up). Once you have this measurement, decide how much surround facing that you would like to show between the legs of your mantel and the firebox opening width. A good rule of thumb is 6 - 8".
Step 2: Mantel Opening Height "B"
This is the height of the inside of each mantel leg. To determine, start by figuring the actual firebox opening height (see Fig. A, ) by measuring the opening from top to bottom (include vents if applicable, but not any metal flange that you want to cover up). If your firebox opening is above the floor or desired hearth height, add this measurement to your firebox opening height. Once you have this measurement, decide how much surround facing that would like to show above your firebox opening. A good rule of thumb is 1 to 2 times what your showing on each side of the firebox opening.
Each mantel has a dimensional chart that gives you dimensions for other mantel parts and the math to figure what your Opening Width "C" and Opening Height "B" choices will mean for the Overall Mantel Width and Overall Mantel Height. Be sure to check these to insure that you have enough room on your wall, free of obstacles like windows, doors and light switches.
Rest assured that we will not process any order without reviewing and confirming all measurements with you. Click here for a measurement form.
Optional Hearths
We can create the perfect hearth for your mantel. Hearths are available in 1" heights and above. In most cases you will want your hearth length, to match the Overall Length "D" of your mantel. Standard hearth depth is 20" (other depths by request).
Optional Overmantels
Overmantels can be created in any height to complement your mantel and ceiling height. Special accommodations can be made in each style for plasma television access or other.
1 - Uncoverable Opening Width (Do not include outer flange of metal firebox)
2 - Uncoverable Opening Height (Do not include outer flange of metal firebox)
3 - Floor to Uncoverable Opening Measured from: Finished Floor OR Subfloor OR Estimated (Pre-Demolition)
4 - Floor to Bottom of Flange Measured from: Finished Floor OR Subfloor OR Estimated (Pre-Demolition)
