  • Crafted from solid Pine wood
  • Genuine rough-sawn timber for a natural distressed look
  • Complementary drill bits are included
  • Comes with stain and clear coat lacquer finish, making it water resistant

The Elkhorn Solid Timber Wood Mantel Shelf is the "real deal" when it comes to an authentic wood beam. It truly is a solid piece of rough-sawn Pine timber, with beautiful and natural looking aging, distressing and splitting. The Elkhorn is a stunning shelf that genuinely feels like a piece of natural looking art. Paired with a shiplap wall, brick or traditional drywall, the addition of the Elkhorn will bring a refreshing focal point to your room. Choose to hang the shelf above your fireplace in a traditional sense, or use it as a floating shelf on a decorative/accessory wall. As the shelf is solid wood, it does have some weight to it and requires just a bit more when it comes to installation. Don't worry, we assure it's still a simple installation and provide easy-to-follow-instructions, all the necessary hardware and even the appropriately sized drill bits. The Elkhorn solid wood shelf is proudly made in the U.S.A from real Pine wood.

This substantial shelf is available in 36", 48", 60" & 72" sizes, accommodating virtually any installation type. Choose from 4 beautiful finish options: Aged Oak, Dark Chocolate, Driftwood or Mahogany.

Solid Mantel Shelf – Suggested Installation Instructions

Important: wood mantels are considered a combustible material, so heat clearances must be adhered to. Before installing, check your local building codes and the manufacturer's instructions for your specific fireplace insert or stove.

Parts included:

  • 1 - Solid mantel shelf
  • 3 - Hanger bolts (for attaching to wall studs - NOT brick or drywall)
  • 2 - Hex nuts
  • 1 - 9/16" drill bit
  • 1 - 3/8" drill bit (for drilling into wall studs - NOT brick or drywall)

Minimum tools required:

  • Pencil or pen
  • Tape measure
  • Wrench (crescent or socket)
  • Drill

Optional tools (not required, but may be helpful):

  • Stud finder
  • Level
  • Hammer
  • Construction adhesive

Determine location on wall and drill holes

First, measure the length of your mantel shelf (should be 36", 48", 60" or 72")

Using a pencil, mark on the wall where you would like the left and right side of your mantel shelf to be.

Within those marks, locate 3 studs (2x4 boards) inside the wall you will be mounting to. If you can only find 2 studs that will suffice, but 3 studs is recommended.

After locating the studs, make a pencil mark on the center of each stud located 3" below the desired location of the top surface of the mantel shelf (see image).

Important: Use a tape measure or level to double check that wall marks are at the same vertical height. Ensuring these marks are at the same height will simplify installation. However, differing horizontal distances between studs in the wall will not matter.

Using 3/8" bit provided, drill (3) holes 4" deep into the wall where you made marks. Holes should be drilled straight. After drilling holes, remove the 3/8" bit from your drill and set aside (do NOT use again).

Attach the hanger bolts to the wall

Find the hanger bolt that already has (2) hex nuts attached.

Place coarse-thread end of hanger bolt into the first hole in your wall, and twist clockwise to tighten.

  • Tighten by hand until it becomes too difficult to tighten by hand.
  • Using a crescent wrench or socket wrench, continue tightening hanger bolt into wall until only 4" of bolt remains visible.
  • Tip: In order to tighten with a wrench, both hex nuts must stay together and you should only tighten the nut on the outside (see diagram below).

After the first hanger bolt is fully attached to the wall, remove hex nuts and attach them to the second hanger bolt.

Repeat process of attaching all remaining hanger bolts to wall.

Drill holes into back of mantel shelf

Measure the distance between the hanger bolts you just attached to your wall.

Using a pencil, make corresponding marks on the back side of your mantel shelf 3" below the top surface. You can choose which side of the mantel shelf you prefer as the top or bottom surface.

Using 9/16” bit provided, drill holes 4.5" deep into the back side of the mantel shelf (where you made marks). Holes should be drilled straight.

Final Step: Mount the mantel shelf to the hanger bolts (this step is easiest with 2 people)

Slide mantel shelf over hanger bolts.

  • Optional: you may choose to apply construction adhesive inside the holes prior to sliding mantel shelf over hanger bolts (though this is not required).

Adjustments may be required to successfully complete this step. See tips below if your mantel shelf does not slide on easily the first time.

Tips for mounting

  • First, try to wiggle one or both sides of the mantel shelf while trying to slide it on the hanger bolts. If you are doing this by yourself, wiggle one side at a time and alternate sides. If there are two people (much easier), you can wiggle both sides together.
  • If you notice that any of your hanger bolts are not attached to the wall straight, tap the bolts with a hammer to correct the straightness. Then try again to slide the mantel shelf on the hanger bolts.
  • You may also use a scrap piece of wood (not provided) as a strike plate to tap the mantel shelf onto the hanger bolts. Place the strike plate against the face of the mantel shelf and tap with a hammer until it slides on the hanger bolts.

Delivery

As defined by the trucking industry, Home Delivery means "curbside delivery" in a residential area. You may need assistance to move the package indoors or you might unbox the shipment and carry each piece inside individually. While some drivers may assist in getting a shipment into a garage or carport, it is not a standard level of service with "curbside delivery."

"White Glove" Delivery Upgrade

  • "Threshold" delivery - Freight carrier will carry items to a ground-floor threshold such a main entry or garage (no stairs) and less than 200 lbs.
  • "Room of Choice" or "White Glove"" delivery - A special delivery service will bring your items to the room you specify, including up to 10 steps. No unpacking, debris removal, assembly or setup. All deliveries over 200 lbs. will be quoted prior to processing order.
  • All upgraded delivery options must be added prior to processing order.

Receiving Your Shipment

We are committed to making sure you are satisfied with our products. Your order is inspected prior to shipment to ensure all items are in excellent condition before they leave our facilities. Although our products are packaged securely to prevent any damage it’s possible that in rare cases, damages may occur during shipment.

Before signing for the shipment inspect the carton. The most important thing to remember about truck freight is that when you sign for the delivery you are legally accepting the product as delivered in good condition. Therefore, it is extremely important that you inspect the product prior to signing the delivery receipt. If there is damage to the carton or the product, please write "CONTENTS DAMAGED" clearly on the delivery receipt that the driver is asking you to sign, then sign. This insures that your damage issue will be easily resolved.

If your package has tears, rips or is otherwise in poor condition, open the package and inspect the contents. You may need one of the following on hand to help open the carton: knife, hammer, pry bar or wire cutters. Should you notice any damage, please note it on the delivery receipt and contact us immediately.

If your package/item is damaged, you can start the damage claim process by completing this form.

NOTE: We cannot be held responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement of damaged items if there is no notation on the Freight Delivery Receipt. Contact us within 24 hours to initiate a damage claim.
