Wood Mantel Shelves 

Most wood mantel shelves are installed using a mounting board, cleat or concealed bracket. The support is attached to wall studs or masonry before the mantel shelf is placed over it and secured.

A full mantel surround usually includes a shelf, header and legs. The components may need to be assembled before the surround is centered, leveled and secured around the fireplace opening.

Consider Your Wall Surface 

Your wall construction determines which tools, fasteners and anchors you will need. 

Common installation surfaces include: 

  • Drywall over wood studs
  • Brick
  • Stone
  • Concrete or concrete block
  • Tile or stone veneer 

The visible wall covering may not provide enough support by itself. For example, a mantel installed over drywall will usually need to be secured to studs or structural blocking rather than the drywall alone.

The Basic Fireplace Mantel Installation Process 

Although every product is different, most mantel installations follow the same general steps: 

  • Review the fireplace and mantel instructions.
  • Confirm the required fireplace clearance.
  • Find the center of the fireplace opening.
  • Mark the planned mantel height.
  • Locate wall studs or suitable masonry support.
  • Dry-fit the mantel and check that it is level.

How High Should a Fireplace Mantel Be? 

There is no universal mantel height. The correct position depends on the fireplace manufacturer’s clearance requirements, the mantel’s depth and the proportions of the room.
